A former vice-mayor of Hangzhou was sentenced to death after having been found guilty of corruption charges. Xu Maiyong was convicted of embezzlement, bribery and abuse of power during his time in several offices between 1995 and 2009 – he was found to have illegally profited by 269 million yuan ($41.3 million).  

In a unrelated case, Xu Zongheng, the former mayor of Shenzhen city, was given a two-year suspended death sentence for bribery in relatioto payments totalling 33 million yuan ($5 million). The sentence was suspended as he confessed to his crimes. Mr. Zongheng was found to have taken bribes from building material companiesand officials between 2001 and 2009. In China,sentence of this degree is usually commuted to life in prison.
