Senate Finance Committee Advances Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Nominee Rep. Tom Price on February 1, 2017
On January 31, 2017, the Senate Finance Committee held an executive session on the nomination of Rep. Tom Price (R-GA) for Department of Health and Human Services Secretary. The Committee's Democratic members boycotted the executive session, preventing the Committee from reaching the necessary quorum to advance Dr. Price's nomination out of Committee.
As a result of the boycott, on February 1, 2017, Senate Finance Committee Republicans voted to temporarily suspend the Committee's standing rule that at least one member of each party must be in attendance for Committee work to proceed. This temporary suspension allowed Finance Committee Republicans to approve Rep. Price's nomination for HHS Secretary without the presence or support of the Committee's Democratic members.
The Finance Committee's approval allows Rep. Price's nomination to move forward to a full Senate vote.
