The United States Government Accountability Office (GAO) has released a report entitled, “Climate Change: Federal Actions Will Greatly Affect the Viability of Carbon Capture and Storage As a Key Mitigation Option.” The GAO report determined that there are some barriers preventing CCS deployment, including “underdeveloped and costly CO2 capture technology,” as well as regulatory and legal issues such as property rights and environmental liability, surrounding the capture, injection and storage of CO2. The report also addresses the CCS-related work that federal agencies, such as DOE, EPA and DOI, have performed, and the future challenges of CCS deployment.
