With the Fair Work Commission's Expert Panel having completed its annual review of minimum wages in modern awards and the national minimum wage, it is timely that schools review what they are paying their award and non-award employees. 

Schools who engage employees who are not covered by an enterprise agreement, including casual employees, should ensure that they will continue from 1 July 2014 to be paid at least the minimum wage for their award classification, or the national minimum wage if the employee is award free.  In particular, schools should be aware that the Courts continue to impose heavy penalties on employers who do not comply with their minimum wage obligations.

From the start of the first full pay period on or after 1 July 2014:  

  • The modern award minimum wages will increase by 3% (rounded to the nearest 10 cents).    
  • The national minimum wage will increase to $640.90 per week or $16.87 per hour (on the basis of a 38 hour week for a full-time employee).  This constitutes an increase of $18.70 per week to the current weekly rate or 50 cents per hour to the hourly rate.    
  • The casual loading for award/agreement free employees will increase to 25%.

For schools that are covered by an enterprise agreement, the base rates of pay under that agreement must not be less than the rate that would be payable to an employee under one of the applicable modern awards.

The weekly rate of pay for an employee is determined by dividing the annual rate by 52.18. 

Casual rates of pay

We also recommend that schools review their casual rates of pay from 1 July 2014 for employees who are not otherwise covered by an enterprise agreement and particularly if they work on a weekend, when penalty rates apply.   For instance, employees often engaged by schools on a casual basis include:  

  • Grounds/maintenance assistants
  • Boarding house assistants
  • Gardeners
  • Instrumental music tutors
  • Sports coaches
  • Sports trainers
