Governor Rendell signed legislation that increases penalties for motorists who recklessly or with gross negligence cause an accident that results in the death of an emergency responder who is acting in an official capacity.

Under the new law, a person convicted of a violation may be sentenced to an additional term of up to five years in prison if it is proven beyond reasonable doubt the offense took place in an active work zone or the victim was an emergency responder under the definition of the new law.
