The guidance lists a number of steps for borrowers to take, starting with collecting documents and information and then calling the Bureau at a specified telephone number. The Bureau will connect the borrower with a HUD-approved housing counselor who will work with the borrower and his or her mortgage company to try to avoid foreclosure. A link is also provided for those borrowers who prefer to seek mortgage help online. Finally, the CFPB warns borrowers to be vigilant against foreclosure prevention and loan modification scammers, and directs consumers to contact the Bureau if they think they may be a target or a victim of such a scam.
