General Healthcare Group (GHG) has offered to sell its newly acquired Abbey Carrick Glen hospital, in an attempt to secure competition clearance for its acquisition of three other Abbey hospitals and effective control over Transform Holdings Limited. The divestment offer follows an investigation by the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) which raised concerns over the catchment overlap between GHG’s BMI Ross Hall hospital and Abbey Carrick Glen. The effect of the overlap would be to reduce the number of private medical service providers in the Ayr area from three to two. On 14 October 2010, the OFT announced it was minded to accept the proposed undertaking. It has suspended the decision to refer the transaction to the Competition Commission while it holds a public consultation to confirm that the proposed sale would remove the competition concerns.
