On January 18th, the Supreme Electoral Tribunal issued Decree number 1-2019, by means of which it called for general elections for the positions of: President and Vice President of the Republic; members to the Congress of the Republic; municipal corporations and deputies to the Central American Parliament.
The elections will take place on Sunday, June 16th, 2019, in all the electoral districts of the Republic of Guatemala. The date for the second round, if applicable, would be August 11th .
The deadline for the registration of candidates closed last March 17th. So far, several political organizations have proclaimed different candidates for popular election. However, there is some expectation regarding some candidates that already are being referred to as illegal or that violate prohibitions established at the constitutional level. Specifically, in the presidential ballot there has been questioning regarding three candidates who have, according to various surveys, the highest vote intention.

This electoral process is the first one that takes place after the recent reforms to Law on Elections and Political Parties, and in which the rules of electoral propaganda were modified.
In any case, it is important to note that the current scenario is complex, and it is difficult to predict what may happen during the electoral process.
