On 10 February 2010, the new Competition Commissioner, Joaquin Almunia, took office. Mr Almunia is an economist and was formerly Commissioner for Economic and Monetary affairs. His stated policy priorities include:

  • anti-cartel enforcement and prevention of abuse of a dominant position;
  • finding a means of effective compensation for victims of illegal antitrust behaviour; and
  • managing the financial crisis and its impact through state aid control and considering ways of further streamlining state aid control procedures.
