The Chancellor of the Exchequer, Alistair Darling, has addressed the Foreign Press Association in advance of the meeting of the G20 finance ministers. He said that the main steps in the UK has been to:

  1. to provide direct support for the economy;
  2. to strengthen the financial system, preventing its collapse
  3. cleaning of the banks enabling them to lend and restructure.

He said the key for these initiatives and to further initiatives was to work together in collaboration with other countries.
