The OFT has been investigating alleged anti-competitive practices between supermarkets and dairy producers regarding the price of certain dairy products. The OFT issued a statement of objections in September 2007, containing allegations of a cartel in the UK to increase the price of milk, butter and UK produced cheese. The OFT announced, on 7 December, that it had entered into “early resolution agreements” with Asda, Sainsbury’s, Safeway, Dairy Crest, The Cheese Company and Wiseman. Under the settlement, the parties admitted their participation in pricing arrangements and agreed to pay fines amounting to £116m. The OFT is continuing its separate investigation into activities by Morrisons, Tesco and Lactalis McLelland.
