Federal Environment Minister Peter Kent, speaking before a House of Commons Committee this week, stated that he now expects that emissions regulations for the oil and gas industry will be coming out mid-year.

He blamed the delay in publishing regulations in part on his department being occupied until recently with preparing similar regulations for coal fired power plants.  He also stated that his department is conducting extensive consultation in advance of publishing the regulations, to avoid the multi-year review process that delayed the implementation of the power generation rules.

The regulations are part of Canada's commitment to cut GHG emissions by 17% from 2005 levels by 2020.
