On 12 April 2012, the European Commission issued a questionnaire to welcome views on the future regulation of the “IoT”. Through the use of radio-frequency identification technology, everyday objects such as phones, cars, household appliances, clothes and food can be wirelessly connected to the Internet through smart chips. The Commission is launching a public consultation to understand how to promote the potential economic and societal benefits of IoT whilst protecting the rights of individuals by retaining control over machines which can gather, process and store information. Comments are invited by 12 July 2012 and results of the public consultation will be presented by summer 2013. Read more.
