The US global pharmaceutical company Pfizer has been given conditional approval by the European Commission (Commission) to acquire Wyeth, a US rival. The proposed transaction will be subject to a number of conditions to ensure that the deal does not adversely affect competition in the European Economic Area. The parties businesses are largely complementary in the area of human health, but there were some significant overlaps in relation to animal health products. The Commission accepted Pfizer's commitments to divest businesses in several national markets relating to various animal vaccines, sedatives, antibiotics and parasiticides. Pfizer will also have to divest its manufacturing facility in Sligo, Ireland.
