On October 3, 2008, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (“USCBP") announced a new web feature which would facilitate travel compliance as part of the Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (“WHTI"). The U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (“USCIS") launched a new traveler-centric desktop widget which automatically provides a trip countdown timer, weather information at the traveler’s destination, and reminds the user to obtain appropriate travel documents as required under WHTI. Under WHTI, U.S. and Canadian citizens entering the U.S. from Canada, Mexico, Bermuda or the Caribbean must present a passport or other WHTI-compliant document beginning June 1, 2009. The USCIS is using all avenues of advertisements to get the word out regarding the new travel requirements.
