Over the next two months the Portland City Council will consider a proposal by Commissioner Amanda Fritz to require protected sick time for private sector employees working in the City of Portland.
Under the proposed Ordinance employers with six or more employees will be required to provide its employees working in the City of Portland with a minimum of one hour of accrued "paid" sick time for every 30 hours of work performed by the employee. Employers with up to five employees will be required to provide the same amount of "unpaid" sick time to its Portland employees. The use of sick time can not exceed 40 hours in a calendar year. Accrued but unused sick time may be carried over to following calendar years. The proposed Ordinance does not require an employer to compensate an employee for unused sick time upon the employee's termination, resignation, retirement, or other separation from employee.
If adopted, the effective date of the Ordinance would be January 1, 2014.
