According to the Guardian, under current Government proposals, there will be provision for the Green Investment Bank to help fund nuclear reactors (if required), despite the Conservatives' manifesto promise that the bank would finance “new green technology start-ups”. Since this was reported it has not been denied. Plans later came to light to suggest that the bank may offer “nuclear free” bonds, which contain no link to nuclear funding for those who wish to abstain from any link to nuclear power. EDF, Scottish Power and the UK Sustainable Investment and Finance Association are said to support investment into new reactors by the Green Investment Bank, but recognise that nuclear free bonds may be necessary to avoid any accusation of the Government back-tracking on its manifesto. Further announcements are expected by the end of Spring.
