EPA has announced that it will develop the first national standard for perchlorate in drinking water because of concerns that the chemical might affect the normal function of the thyroid gland. The agency also announced on February 2, 2011, that it will develop a separate regulation addressing up to 16 chemicals that may cause cancer. The group of 16 includes volatile organic compounds (VOCs), such as industrial solvents like trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE), as well as other regulated and some unregulated contaminants discharged from industrial operations. See EPA Press Release, February 2, 2011.
