Canadian permanent residents require a permanent resident (PR) card to travel by commercial carrier into Canada. PR cards are valid for 5 years. PR cards were first introduced in the summer of 2002. Therefore, a surge of PR card renewal applications is expected during the summer and fall as PR card holders coming up to the 5-year anniversary date of their cards seek new ones. The government is urging Canadian permanent residents to renew their PR card well in advance to avoid any potential delays which might impede their ability to travel.
