The Ministry of Energy and Mines’ General Energy Office, through the Ministerial Agreement Number 180-2022, classified green hydrogen as a renewable energetic resource. With this qualification, the owners of energy projects with green hydrogen will be eligible to get the incentives included in the Law of Incentives for the Development of Renewable Energy Projects, Decree Number 52-2003 of the Congress of the Republic of Guatemala.
Among the incentives included in the law are:
- Exemption of customs rights applicable to the import of machinery and equipment used for energy generation in the renewable energy projects for a 10-year term.
- Income Tax exemption applicable the portion that corresponds to renewable energy projects for a 10-year term.
- Opportunity to issue Certified Emission Reduction credits for their negotiation.
The ministerial agreement was published on the Official Gazette on July 29th and came into force on July 30th.
