(“Elektronische Gesundheitsakte - ELGA”)

The new Austrian Health Telematics Act (Gesundheitstelematikgesetz 2012) which comes into effect on 1 January 2013 provides for a new information system called “Elektronische Gesundheitsakte - ELGA” which will ensure a cross organizational information flow of important health data between healthcare professionals (hospitals, doctors, pharmacies) and patients. It will allow access to information independent of place and time to improve the quality and efficiency of health care.

The patient can choose whether she/he wants to participate in whole or in part in this system. For healthcare professionals the law requires that certain findings and documents have to be stored in the ELGA, but also states that otherwise general participation in the system is a right and not an obligation.
