USA October 23 2019

On Sept. 30, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed California S.B. 206 which will allow California students-athletes to receive "compensation as a result of the use of that student’s name, image and likeness" starting in the year 2023.

California S.B. 206 is in direct contravention with Section 12.5.2.1 of the 2019- 2020 National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I Manual, which prohibits a student-athlete from participating in collegiate athletics if such student "accepts any remuneration for or permits the use of his or her name or picture to advertise, recommend or promote directly the sale or use of a commercial product or service of any kind."
