The proposed acquisition of the German internet and telecommunications services provider Hansenet Telekommunikation GmbH by the Telefonica Group was given approval by the European Commission on 29 January 2010. The deal will see Hansenet merge with Telefonica Deutschland GmbH, a German subsidiary of the Group which provides fixed and mobile telephone services across Europe and parts of Latin America. After investigating the possible effects of the acquisition on the broadband internet and telecoms industries, the Commission concluded that the union was unlikely to significantly impede competition in the EEA. The two companies have different business focuses and are not major rivals in any of the relevant markets. Furthermore, their activities within Germany are limited and they will still face strong competition from a number of firms, including Deutsche Telekom.
