President Obama’s trip to Canada ended with him and Prime Minister Harper announcing an agreement to begin a clean energy dialogue. President Obama called the agreement an “extraordinary beginning” as the two countries come together to fight greenhouse gas emissions and their effect on climate change. The agreement will see the two countries work together on emerging technologies, such as carbon capture and storage and smart grid. Canada’s Natural Resource Minister Lisa Raitt believes commercializing CCS is vital to both countries economies due to the abundance of oilsands in Canada and coal in the United States.
