On September 22nd, Mary Schapiro, SEC Chairman, testified before members of the House Committees on Financial Services and Oversight and Government Reform about the potential conflict of interest concerning former General Counsel David Becker, who was involved with the investigation of Bernard Madoff's Ponzi scheme. Becker's mother had previously been an investor with Madoff, though her account was closed years before the fraud came to light. The SEC's Ethics Counsel cleared Becker to work on the case, but later questions arose regarding the appropriateness of his involvement, and the SEC's Inspector General opened an investigation.
