On 1 May 2012, the Competition Commission published its final report on the anticipated construction materials joint venture between Anglo American and Lafarge. The Competition Commission will require both companies to sell a significant portfolio of operations, to allow entry for new competitors into the UK cement market, before their proposed joint venture can go ahead. It is concerned that it will reduce competition in national and local markets for other products including aggregates, asphalt and ready-mix concrete. It believes that the sales will protect consumers’ interests, which is particularly important when so much construction work is funded by the public. Read more.
