UK Visas & Immigration (UKVI) announced that, as of 2 June 2014, certain applicants will receive status updates about their applications by e-mail. This is relevant for the following applications:

  • indefinite leave to remain (also known as settlement or permanent residency)
  • British citizenship
  • EEA applications, eg via the EEA1, EEA2, EEA3, and EEA4 forms

Currently, UKVI aims to process these applications within six months (click here for details). Until now, such applicants could only obtain an update on their applications if six months or more had passed. This initiative will run for up to six months subject to any internal evaluations. It has been developed in response to feedback from applicants as well as advisers from organisations such as Penningtons Manches, who have indicated that up-to-date communication on these types of applicants would be welcome.

The relevant application forms have been updated in order to reflect this new initiative and to allow applicants to provide an e-mail address for such correspondence. An applicant should note that updates will be only sent to the specified e-mail address included on the form. Meanwhile, all current forms of postal communication will continue.
