The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) released a revised Employment Eligibility Verification Form (I-9) that is now available for use by employers. The new I-9, which is dated 3/08/13 in the bottom left hand corner, can be found on the USCIS website.
Employers are required to complete an I-9 for each employee who is hired in the United States. The new I-9 should only be completed for new hires and in certain re-verification situations, but not for existing employees. Employers may continue to use previously valid I-9 forms until May 7, 2013. Then, employers must use the new I-9. Some of the changes to the I-9 include:
- The new form is now two pages;
- Expanded instructions; and
- New fields for email address, phone number, and foreign passport in Section 1.
