The Independent Taskforce, set up as a result of the Pike River disaster, has this week launched its Safer Workplaces consultation document. The Taskforce is conducting a review of whether the overall workplace health and safety system - including legislation, regulation, incentives and enforcement – is working effectively to reduce workplace injury and death. It will make recommendations to the Government by 30 April 2013 on measures to reduce workplace deaths and serious injuries by 25% by 2020.

The consultation document calls for views on a range of issues, including:

  • The regulatory framework and the roles and responsibilities of the regulator.
  • The capacity and capability of the workplace health and safety system.
  • Major hazards and health and hazardous substances.

Submissions to the Taskforce close on 16 November. Further information on the consultation process, and the full consultation document, can be accessed here.
