On the same day that the National Audit Office report on the “Regulatory Effectiveness of the Charity Commission” was published, the Cabinet Office also published a consultation on extending the Charity Commission’s powers to tackle abuse in charities. The consultation will run until 12 February 2014 and further information can be found here.

The Cabinet Office also published a “Report from the Prime Minister’s Task Force on Tackling Radicalisation and Extremism”. That report also refers to a consultation on new legislation to strengthen the powers of the Charity Commission. The task force was established by the Prime Minister to look at areas where further work is needed to tackle extremism. The report recognises that charities can be targeted by extremist individuals and groups and that legislation may be required to help organisations confront and exclude extremists. Legislation may also be required to give greater powers to the Charity Commission to help tackle extremism and other abuses of charitable status such as tax avoidance and fraud.
