The Immigration Service recently expanded its premium processing service to include several new visa categories. This service, which was initially only available for employment-based temporary visas, permits an employer to pay a $1,000 premium fee in return for the Immigration Service's guarantee that the petition will be processed within ten calendar days. Given current processing backlogs, this premium processing service can be a very valuable option for employers. The Immigration Service currently permits employers to request premium processing for immigrant petitions for the following employment-based visa categories: Professionals; Skilled Workers; Workers other than Skilled or Professional Workers; Outstanding Professors and Researchers; and Members of the Professions with Advanced Degrees or Exceptional Ability not seeking a National Interest Waiver. As of November 13, 2006, petitions for foreign nationals with extraordinary ability will also be eligible for this service. The Immigration Service has stated that it plans to extend premium processing to applications for employment authorization documents (EAD) and certain applications to change or extend temporary status in the future.
