On April 19 2002 the Parliament of Catalonia passed Law 5/2002, which creates the Data Protection Agency of Catalonia. The legislation affects databases created by the government of Catalonia, entities involved with local administration, universities and public entities connected to the Catalonian government.
The new law will also apply to databases created by these entities provided that the files are managed by (i) public or private entities that provide public services, or (ii) private entities in which the government or local entities have an important interest and which provide services for public bodies.
The law establishes a three-month period for the registration of existing automated files and a two-year period for the registration of existing non-automated files.
