On September 12 2000 the Australian Communication Authority announced the granting of the fiftieth telecommunications carrier licence in Australia. This is in contrast to three carrier licences which existed in 1996, prior to the deregulation of the telecommunications market in 1997.
For Australian consumers, there is increasingly more choice in telecommunications products, services and prices with the growth in the number of carriers and other service providers. According to figures released by the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission in April this year, consumers are continuing to reap benefits from the significant price reductions across most services between 1995 and 1999. Local call prices have decreased by 15%, subscriber trunk dialing (STD) rates have decreased by about 40% and long distance call rates have decreased by about 60%.
