Access to public information
AAPI domestic and international collaboration
The Argentine Agency for Access to Public Information (AAPI) recently published its annual report highlighting its activities in 2021. The AAPI is the supervisory authority of the Personal Data Protection Law, the Do Not Call Registry Law and the Access to Public Information Law. This article comments on the most important aspects of the report.
The AAPI highlighted the following activities in relation to personal data protection:
- The AAPI received 386 complaints for possible violations of the Personal Data Protection Law.
- The AAPI imposed 31 sanctions on different organisations.
- The amount of ex-officio investigations was increased by around 50%.
- The AAPI processed 4,192 database registration applications, which were submitted by both public and private organisations.
The AAPI reported the following activities in relation to the Do Not Call Registry:
- 12,664 complaints were filed with the Registry and 155,213 telephone lines were included in the Do Not Call Registry.
- The AAPI detected a trend towards a decrease in the amount of complaints.
Regarding access to public information, the AAPI highlighted the following:
- In 2021, 8,414 requests to public authorities were submitted for access to information. This showed an increase of around 40% in comparison with 2020 figures.
- 531 claims were filed, which represents an increase of 62% in comparison with 2020.
AAPI domestic and international collaboration
The report also noted that the AAPI provided support to different Argentine agencies, such as the National Communication Agency, and regularly assisted the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in different activities. It also participated in international forums, such as the Ibero-American Data Protection Network and the Global Privacy Assembly, among others. The AAPI also participated in international forums, such as the Latin American Transparency Network.
