Below are official statistics from the National Labour Relations Commission (NLRC) showing the number of NLRC cases from 2008 to 2010. Death and disability claims by seafarers are classified under money claims. Statistics show that money claims declined by 5% from 2009 (1,805) to 2010 (1,713), although they increased by 38% from 2008 (1,307) to 2009 (1,805).
According to statistics from the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration, 347,150 Filipino seafarers were deployed in 2010. The percentage of NLRC money claims (ie, death and disability claims; 1,713) for 2010 is approximately 0.49% of total seafarers deployed. The percentage of all seafarer claims (2,727) for 2010, including illegal dismissal claims, is approximately 0.79% of seafarers deployed. Filipino seafarer claims do not exceed 1% of total deployed seafarers. The number of total deployed seafarers (347,150) includes marine and non-marine (ie, cruise) personnel.
Claims filed with the National Conciliation Mediation Board are minimal and do not materially affect the results as a vast majority of claims are still filed with the NLRC.
