On March 16 2012 the Department of Merchant Shipping announced that the Merchant Shipping (Community Vessel Traffic Monitoring and Information System) Order 2012 entered into force, issued under Section 351 of the Merchant Shipping (Community Vessel Traffic Monitoring and Information System) Laws 2004 and 2010. The order transposes EU Directive 2011/15/EC, amending EU Directive 2002/59/EC.

The order replaces the second and fourth schedules of the laws, respectively titled "Mandatory On-Board Equipment" and "Measures that the Committee on Places of Refuge-Safety may take to Ensure Maritime Safety, Safety of Life and the Protection of the Environment" with the latest versions introduced by the new directive.

The new directive refers to the revocation of International Maritime Organisation (IMO) Resolution MSC 150(77)3 and its replacement by IMO Resolution MSC 286(86)4, and for substitution of the reference to Resolution MSC 150(77) in Article 12(1)(b) of EU Directive 2002/59/EC, as amended. There is no need for amendments to the Merchant Shipping (Community Vessel Traffic Monitoring and Information System) Laws 2004 and 2010, since they define Resolution MSC 150(77) as being the up-to-date version of the resolution.
