The National Institute for the Defence of Competition and Protection of Intellectual Property (Indecopi) has announced that 31,475 trademark registration applications were filed during the period between January 2021 and September 2021. Of those applications, 28,133 already have their corresponding certificate. Compared with the same period in 2020, this figure represents an increase of 19.3% in the number of applications submitted.
This result is closely linked to the campaigns that Indecopi has been promoting in favour of entrepreneurs and small and medium-sized enterprises. It has been working on informing these entities about the benefits of having a registered trademark and the impact that a trademark can generate during the economic reactivation of the market.
In the period between March 2020 and September 2021, the categories with the highest number of registered trademarks are as follows:
- food products – 5,693 registered trademarks;
- pharmaceutical products – 4,946 registered trademarks;
- advertising and commercial business management – 3,843 registered trademarks;
- clothing and retail services – 3,386 registered trademarks; and
- education and entertainment – 3,258 registered trademarks.
