Domain Name Registration
New Designs Act

Domain Name Registration

It is now possible for foreign entities to obtain domain registration for the top-level country-code domain .is on the grounds of trademark registration. A national registration or alternatively an International Registration (Madrid Protocol), designating Iceland, is required. However, it is not possible to register a domain name on grounds of a community trademark registration or other foreign registration.

New Designs Act

A new Design Act came into force on October 1 2001. The new act makes no drastic amendments but it is now possible at the outset to claim registration for the whole 25-year registration period. The old act provided for a registration period of 25 years, renewable every five years upon payment of a fee. A subscriber can now choose whether to pay the registration fee for the whole 25-year period in full upon registration or by renewal every five years.
