On June 4 2012 the Dutch government released a tax bill that proposes certain amendments to implement a number of the proposals for the 2013 budget. By way of subsequent tax bills that are likely to be released in September 2012, certain additional measures will be proposed.

Among other things, the bill proposes a reform of energy taxation, largely by increasing energy taxes in the following ways:

  • The existing exemption from coal tax for coal used for the generation of electricity in qualifying plants will be abolished; and
  • The tariff structure and rates for the existing energy tax for natural gas will be amended and increased.
