Since 1999 the Association of British Insurers (ABI) has published a Statement of Best Practice for Critical Illness Cover to ensure that customers of such products can ensure that there are certain minimum standards of cover, that products are comparable across the market and to improve understanding about coverage

In a post-implementation review of the ICOBS, research into oral disclosure undertaken on behalf of the FSA by BMRB Limited into sales of critical illness cover has revealed that many of the disclosure issues highlighted in a mystery shopping survey undertaken in 2006 still persist in the market
