The Union of Concerned Scientists released a report April 16 concluding that electric vehicles are cheaper to charge and emit less CO2 than gasoline vehicles, even in areas with coal-fired utilities. The report, State of Charge: Electric Vehicles’ Global Warming Emissions and Fuel-Cost Savings Across the United States, shows that electric vehicle owners could save between $700 and $1,200 per year on fuel costs compared with owners of average new compact gasoline-powered vehicles.
