Happy new year! And this year, the new year comes with a present from New York State.

After a long delay, on December 29, 2014, Governor Cuomo signed a bill eliminating the requirement that employers provide annual written notices to employees under the Wage Theft Prevention Act. As a result of this amendment, employers need not provide the notices that ordinarily would be distributed this month (with a deadline of February 1). Note that employers continue to be required to provide employees with the required notice at the time of hire.

The Department of Labor has posted a notice on its website confirming that annual statements are not required this year (click here for the notice).
