On the 4th August 2016, the European Union amended its restrictive measures on the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (“DPRK”) to implement new measures against the DPRK as set out in UN Resolution 2270, adopted by the Security Council on 2nd March 2016.These amendments add new items to the list of sensitive goods subject to prohibitions on transfer, procurement, and provision of technical assistance; namely, weapons of mass destruction-related items, materials, equipment, goods and technology. The prohibition was first introduced under UN Security Council Resolution 1718 (in 2006). They also tighten the restrictions in place on North Korean vessels by extending the prohibition to entry into ports of vessels owned, operated or crewed by the DPRK to also apply to DPRK flagged vessels.
