In 2015, OSHA announced that it will dramatically increase its enforcement efforts at in-patient care facilities (hospitals, residential care facilities, and nursing homes). As part of its increased enforcement efforts, OSHA recently published its new Worker Safety in Hospitals webpage. The website reveals some sobering statistics. For instance, work-related injuries and illness rates at hospitals is over twice the rate for private industry as a whole, and workers’ compensation losses for hospitals have resulted in approximately $2 billion in annual expenses. The website also includes tools and resources that help in-patient care facilities assess workplace safety needs, implement safety and health management systems, and enhance safe patient handling programs.
