On 21 March 2016 New York Attorney General Eric Schneiderman announced there had been a record number of data breach notices in 2016. The AG's office noted a 60% increase in the total annual number of reported security breaches since the previous year. Approximately 1,300 data breaches were reported, exposing the personal records of over 1.6 million New Yorkers. It was found that the majority of breaches were the result of hacking and unauthorised outside access of electronic data.
Organisations operating in the U.S. should ensure adequate technology systems are maintained and employee training is given on data protection principles and the consequences of breaches, particularly as data breaches are likely to be an increased focus of US authorities in light of this trend.
