On December 12, 2014 the FCC released a Public Notice seeking comment on the Technical Advisory Council’s (TAC) December 4, 2014 report on mobile device theft prevention. The FCC seeks comment on several of the report’s technical and operational recommendations, including:
- making “lock/wipe/restore” functionality operational by default on all wireless devices;
- enhancing protection of unique mobile wireless device identifiers from alteration; and
- improving the timeliness, accuracy, and availability of data about mobile wireless device theft for use by law enforcement.
The FCC also seeks comment on steps that service providers, retailers, resellers, and other mobile wireless communications companies should take to prevent the use of devices identified as lost or stolen in relevant databases. Finally, the FCC seeks data that weighs the costs and benefits of the TAC report’s various theft-prevention recommendations.
