On 27 April 2016, the UK House of Commons Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee confirmed Elizabeth Denham’s appointment as the  new Information Commissioner, following a pre-appointment hearing. During the hearing, Elizabeth Denham stated that her approach would be to prioritise proactive guidance, advice and education of those involved in data processing, as well as continuing to levy heavy fines for serious breaches of data protection law.
