The General Dental Council (GDC) has struck off dentist David Black for working without insurance for almost 20 years. All dentists are required to take out indemnity cover. Mr Black, who ran a surgery in Glasgow, falsely claimed he had made his own arrangements for cover. The GDC found that Mr Black had enquired a number of times about renewing his lapsed cover. This was evidence that he was aware of the importance of having insurance.
Mr Black argued that as a specialist in cosmetic dentistry, any claims against him would not be significant. This was rejected by the GDC who reasoned that any treatment can have “unexpected and severe complications”.
Mr Black was struck off for seriously departing from acceptable standards and banned for five years.
