Labor Secretary Thomas Perez joined the presidents of the SEIU and the AFL-CIO for a conversation on the state of labor in the United States and agreed that the goal for moving forward is to improve collective bargaining rights and boost other employee protections for workers. Both union leaders praised Perez for his work leading the Department of Labor, and all parties agreed that increasing union representation is key to improving working conditions for all Americans.

Sixty-nine House Democrats released a statement supporting college graduate assistants’ right to organize unions. The statement follows the NLRB’s ruling in Columbia University that graduate research and teaching assistants at private U.S. universities are employees under the NLRA and eligible for unionization.
