ACMA has made the Telecommunications Numbering Plan 2015 (the Numbering Plan 2015) to replace the Telecommunications Numbering Plan 1997 (Numbering Plan 1997). While structural changes have been made, the substantive content of the Numbering Plan 2015 largely reflects the Numbering Plan 1997.

Other than removing outdated requirements, the Numbering Plan 2015:

  • streamlines the application and decision-making processes that were set out in the Numbering Plan 1997;
  • deals with the allocation of mobile network codes; and
  • introduces over-the-counter sales, to members of the public, of enhanced rights of use for particular types of freephone and local rate numbers (smartnumbers).
